A WINE THAT STARTS HIGH UP AND AIMS EVEN HIGHER

From an altitude of 549 meters in Albugnano, one can see the hills of the Monferrato Astigiano, and in the distance, the Basilica of Superga and much of the western Alpine arc. We like to imagine that an exciting future is visible there, too.

LET’S START FROM 549

The first news of Albugnano wines dates back to 1148. The history of these wines, of the Vezzolano Abbey and of the Savoy aristocracy are intertwined over the centuries like tendrils. In 1868 the Nebbiolo sparkling wine from Albugnano was awarded at the Asti Exhibition. But it is with the recognition of the DOC, Official Journal of 17 May 1997, that Albugnano begins a new phase of growth.

In 2017, some producers in the area founded the ALBUGNANO 549 Association, to support the oenological, historical, cultural, environmental and socioeconomic identity of the Albugnano DOC production area. From the 549 meters above sea level of Albugnano you can see the hills of the Monferrato Astigiano and, in the distance, the Basilica of Superga and part of the western Alpine arc. We like to imagine that we can also see an interesting future.

ALBUGNANO DOC

Albugnano DOC, in the interpretation of the Association’s winemakers, is a pure Nebbiolo aged in wood for a minimum of 18 months and in the bottle for at least 6 months. A wine that aspires to the excellence of the great Piedmontese wines, aiming for new promotional and commercial spaces, both Italian and international.
The limited production of Albugnano today covers an area of approximately 44 hectares of land.
Gianpiero Gerbi is the Association’s oenologist who supervises the work of the members and the quality of the final product.

549. OUR NAME TELLS OUR STORY

549 is the altitude of the Municipality of Albugnano and, by happy coincidence, this number has a deeper meaning for us. It was on April 5 that 9 of us wine makers met to found the Association, and we come from 4 small municipalities where the Nebbiolo grapes for our DOC wine can be grown: Albugnano, Castelnuovo Don Bosco, Passerano Marmorito and Pino d’Asti. Today, there are more of us, and maybe our number will grow further, but not by much because our Albugnano DOC originates in just these four municipalities.
